RSL faculty and staff regularly teach courses in the school of
engineering. In general, these courses pertain to the research and
design focus of the laboratory. Course descriptions for each of these classes
may be found on-line via the relevant departmental web pages.
Undergraduate Classes
Introduction to Electromechanical Devices (under

This course is under development for possible offering in the 2010-20011
academic year.

Control Systems Engineering (Mech 142) - 5 units.

Mechanical/Electrical/Computer Engineering Senior Design A, B, C
(Mech/Elen/Coen 194, 195, 196) - 2-4 units each depending on
department. Offered throughout the year. Prof. Kitts is able to act as
the departmental advisor for Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer engineering

Graduate Classes
Advanced Mechatronics A, B, C, D (Mech 207, Mech 208, Mech
209, Mech 310) - Mech 207/8 are 3 units each; 209/310 are 2 units
each. This sequence is offered every other
year and will next be taught in the 2009-2010 academic year. Now cross-listed
in EE.
Research in Telerobotic Command and Control Systems (Mech/Elen
311) - 4 units. Offered every other summer quarter, and will next be
taught in 2011. This class also
qualifies as an Undergraduate Honors Program course.
Robotic Manipulation I, II, II: Kinematics, Dynamics and
Control of Robotic Manipulators (Mech/Elen 337, 338, 339) - 2 units each.
This sequence is offered every other year and will next be taught in the
2010-2011 academic year.
Mobile Robots I and II: Kinematics, Dynamics and Control of Mobile
Robots (under development) - 2 units each. This course sequence is under development for possible offering during the
2010-2011
academic year.
Space System Engineering I and II (Mech/Engr 371/372) -
4 units each.
This course sequence is offered every other year and will next be taught
during the 2010-2011 academic year.
Space System Operations (Mech 379) - 1 unit.
This course is offered periodically through the year.
Ocean Technology (offered Winter 2005 as Mech296 Special
Topics in Dynamics and Control) - 2 units. This course is offered
every three years and will next be taught in the 2010-2011 academic year.
Programs
Mechatronics Systems Engineering,
Graduate Certificate, Department of Mechanical Engineering - 16 unit program consisting of
6 units of coursework in Advanced Mechatronics, a graduate control theory class,
and 4 technical electives related to mechatronic system design. Details
are available through the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Robotics and Mechatronic Systems, Masters Degree Concentration Area, Department of Mechanical Engineering
and Department of Electrical Engineering -
45 unit Masters program includes a 16 unit academic concentration on robotics
and mechatronic systems. The course of study requires 6 units of
coursework in Advanced Mechatronics, 4 units of coursework in Robotics, a 2 course advanced control theory sequence, and at
least 2 units of thesis or capstone study. A list of approved technical
electives guides selection of additional classes. Students are
encouraged to take the 2 course Linear Algebra sequence as part of their mathematics requirement. Details
are available through the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical
Engineering.
Space Systems, Masters Degree Concentration Area, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Department of Electrical Engineering, and Department of Computer Engineering -
45 unit Masters program includes an 8 unit core sequence in space systems
design and engineering. Details
are available through the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical
Engineering and Computer Engineering for discipline-specific versions of this
degree program.
