2004

2004 Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation Design Contest- Congratulations to the following award-winning student teams on their outstanding performance in this year's national Lincoln Design Contest for excellence in mechanical engineering system design:

School Award - For outstanding performance by this year's submitted projects.  Every submitted project received an award with two capturing the highly competitive Silver Awards.
 
Silver Award - Haptic Integration of an IBM Robotic Manipulator (Adrian Cuadra, Colson Criffith, Scott Gunther, Krista Hirasuna, Matt Kalkbrenner, and Carol Reilly): The development of a force-feedback object gripping system for the Lab's IBM industrial manipulator.
 
Silver Award - OBSIDIAN: Design of a Microsatellite (Vanessa Cuenca, Christina Jimenez, Jennifer Lundquist, and Sara Nazemian ): The development of a sub-kilogram tip-mass satellite prototype for deployment on the end of a satellite gravity gradient boom.
 
Merit Award - Autonomous Underwater Robot (Andrew Allamby, VanTeresa Bui, Casey Martin, Bryce McGrew): The development of components for a new autonomous underwater vehicle to include new thruster and control surface actuators.
 
Merit Award - Mantaris ROV (Eric Chen, John Huberty, Dan Kachmarik, Jennifer Kerwin, and Tad Luckey): The continued development of components for the Mantaris ROV to include foam packs, a suction sampler and manipulator control system, and a transformer pressure vessel.
 
Merit Award - Design and Implementation of Multiple Holonomic Robots (Mark Barycza, Patrick Connolly, Ryan Kottenstette, and Erick Redwine): The development of two new omnidrive robots with position and velocity control.
 
Merit Award - Portable, Agile, Steerable Communications Antenna (Vanessa DelCarlo, Chris Nelson, Steve Nelson, and Martin Rivas): The development of a portable tracking antenna for wireless communications with mobile aircraft, sounding rockets, and surface vessels.

2004 NASA Team Achievement Award - Prof. Kitts received this award with collaborators from Stanford and NASA Ames for their contributions to the successful development of the Space Technology Center which was inaugurated and opened in the Ames Research Park, Moffett Field during this year.

2004 SCU School of Engineering Senior Design Conference - Congratulations to the following award-winning student teams:

 
Omnifleet: Design of Two Holonomic Robots - Mark Barycza, Patrick Connolly, Ryan Kottenstette, Eric Redwine.  Best Overall Project in Interdisciplinary Engineering.
 
Haptic Gripper for an Industrial Robot - Adrian Cuadra, Krista Hirasuna, Matt Kalkbrenner, Scott Gunther, Colson Griffith, and Carol Reiley. Best of Session, Interdisciplinary Engineering Session 1.

2003

2003 Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation Design Contest- Congratulations to the following award-winning student teams on their outstanding performance in this year's national Lincoln Design Contest for excellence in mechanical engineering system design:

School Award - For outstanding performance by this year's submitted projects.  Every submitted project received an award with one capturing the highly competitive Silver Award and two others capturing Bronze Awards.
 
Silver Award - SHARP Re-entry Vehicle Prototype (Whitney Armbrust, Kevin Murray, Mike Nicholson, Kenneth Pirozzoli): The development of a functional prototype vehicle for the NASA SHARP re-entry vehicle. The team also included EE students Anthony Bucad and Nick Bushnell.
 
Bronze Award - Big Blimpin': Development of an Advanced Control Airship (Christopher Paetsch, Michael Neumann, Shelley Schilz, and Daniel Schuet): The development of an 8.5 ft diameter indoor airship with closed loop orientation and altitude control and wireless tele-control capability. 
 
Merit Award - ROVers: A Tether Management System (Allison Kalis, Eric Monsen, Giselle Sancen, and Janson Young): The continued development of a tether management system for tethered underwater robots.

2003 JUSTSAP Team Award - Prof. Kitts received this award with collaborators in Japan for their founding and successful development of the University Space Systems Symposium program which marked its 6th successful year in 2003.

2003 AIAA Distinguished Service Award- Prof. Kitts received this award for his contributions to the AIAA Space Operations Technical Committee over the past 3 years.

2003 Marine Technology ROV Scholarship - Junior Jennifer Kerwin was awarded this scholarship based on her contributions to the Santa Clara University underwater robotics program and her interest in marine technology.

Merit Award - SAINT System of Automated Imaging Networked Telescopes (Christine MacDonald, Tim Pargett, Joe Teply): The development of a system to support unattended, remote, and automated operation of a telescopic observatory.  The team also included EE students Mario Zaipan and Robert Sinn.
 
Merit Award - Mantaris Underwater ROV Arm (Patty Adams, Zephyr Andrew, Matt Ardema, Jon Deshler, Mike Ereno, John Paulus): The development of an underwater gripper system capable of operating on the Mantaris underwater ROV at a depth of 2000 ft.  The team also included EE student Bryan Matthews.
 
Merit Award - RACE Remote Antenna System (Eric Hornisher, David Masuda): The development, installation and remote control of the fully actuated dual-yagi antennae systems operating on the SCU campus and in Pearl City Hawaii.  The team also included COEN students Dan Oranen, Zac Randles, Mike MacKinnon, and Trevor Cross.
 

Technology Innovation Award - Prof. Kitts received this $15,000 award to initiate a project that will apply the lab's internet-based robotic control technology to the development of internet-based engineering laboratory equipment.

Bronze Medal - Hazardous Area Remotely Operated Vehicle (Andrew Laird, Aaron Parker, Matthew Weis): The development of a robotic manipulator for the Roverwers Terrestrial Rover.
 
Bronze Medal - Eminence Airship (Christine Beltran, Vincent Francisco, Margo Gaitan, Matthew O'Conner): The development of the complete Eminence airship system. The team also included EE student Franklin Alioto and COEN students Mike Rasay and Eric Cina.
 
Merit Award - Emerald Satellite (Chris Benioff, Mike Costa, Brian Failing, Adam Klein, Kyle Roozen, Adam Street): The development of the two Emerald satellite structure and mechanism systems.
 
Merit Award - Mantaris Underwater ROV (Nathan Barnes, Emily Mounce, Matt Petrich, Joey Windham, Jeff Zabel): The development of the Mantaris undersea robot. The team also included EE students Jon Ernst, Bobby Papadatos, and Erin Selser.
 
Merit Award - Mantaris Underwater ROV Tether Management System (Josh Banko, Rusty Johnson): The development of a tether management system for the Mantaris undersea robot. 

2001 SPIE Research Award - Prof. Kitts and the laboratory has been awarded an International Society of Optical Engineering 2001 SPIE Research Grant for its use of optical instruments in robotic applications.

Merit Award - Hazardous Area Remotely Operated Vehicle (Matthew Cole, Peter Vellios, Brian Holm): The development of the Roverwerx terrestrial robot platform and drive system.
 
Merit Award - Design of the Mantaris Undersea Robots (Chad Bulich, Eric Hulin, Elizabeth Drew): The development of the Mantaris Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).

2000 Santa Clara University Outstanding Service Award - Prof. Kitts received this award for his contributions to SCU's School of Engineering involving the development of the Robotic Systems Laboratory and its associated research and interdisciplinary education program.

1999 Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation Design Contest- Congratulations to the following award-winning students teams on their outstanding performance in this year's national Lincoln Design Contest for excellence in mechanical engineering system design:

Silver Medal - Mechanical Design of a Picosatellite (Theresa Kuhlman and Dina Hadi): The development of spacecraft mechanisms and structures for three sub-kilogram spacecraft that were ultimately launched in January 2000.

1999 SCU School of Engineering Senior Design Conference - Congratulations to the following award-winning student teams:

1999 Santa Clara University Outstanding Service Award - Prof. Ota received this award for his contributions to SCU's School of Engineering Mechatronics and Senior Design program.

Prof. Kitts wins AIAA Research Award - Prof. Kitts received the AIAA Graduate Research in Intelligent Control Award which was presented to him at the AIAA Foundation Award Ceremonies during the 1999 AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Reno Nevada.
