Robotic Systems Laboratory

formerly known as the Santa Clara Remote and Extreme Environments Mechanisms (SCREEM) Laboratory

Robots Expeditions & Operations Robotic Control Network Technology

Educational Outreach

The laboratory conducts an extensive educational outreach program in order to bring the excitement of robotics and exploration to the public, to partner K-12 schools, and to collaborating educational institutions.  The emphasis on these efforts is to support underrepresented, economically disadvantaged, and at-risk students.  In addition, the laboratory has a particular interest in developing activities that are fully incorporated into educational curricullae.

To arrange demonstrations, exhibitions, and/or educational programs, please contact Prof. Christopher Kitts.

Current Initiatives

Internet Robotics Learning Testbed - The laboratory is developing an educational service to support K-12, vocational, collegiate, and university programs. The Internet Robotics Learning Testbed will allow students from other institutions to use the laboratory's  robotic systems and control network in order to conduct educational SMET activities.
SCU School of Engineering Programs - The laboratory provides lectures and demonstrations for a variety of SCU-sponsored programs. These include the Summer Engineering Seminars (week -long programs providing an introduction to engineering to underrepresented high school students), the FUSE Frontiers for Underrepresented Students in Engineering program (a 2-day orientation for underrepresented freshman engineering students), and the MUSE Mentoring Underrepresented Students in Engineering Program (an undergraduate program matching underrepresented engineering students with local industry engineers).
SWE Get SET Program - Sponsored by the Santa Clara Valley Section of the Society of Women Engineers, Get SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) is a high school mentoring program with a focus on encouraging  young women to pursue careers in science, math, and engineering. The laboratory supports this program with field demonstrations of robotic vehicles during Get SET summer programs.
US FIRST Program - Students in the laboratory serve as mentors to FIRST teams in the East Side Union High School District.
Engineering Exhibitions - Students and staff support a variety of yearly engineering exhibitions in the Silicon Valley to include corporate events, Engineer's Week activities, and the Lockheed-Martin Take Your Child to Work program.
